CHARLESTON, W. Va.- Col. Timothy D. Dye succeeded Lt. Col. (P) Michael L. Bland as commander of 1st Brigade, 94th Training Division during a change of command ceremony at the brigade headquarters.
Brig. Gen. Don S. Cornett, commander 94th Training Division, reviewed the ceremony and thanked Bland for being the interim commander during a critical four-month period when the brigade needed leadership. Cornett said the brigade's mission, which involves training Quartermaster soldiers, is especially significant during the current Army-wide drawdown.
“As things change, our mission will get tougher and it's important that we put the right leaders in here like Lt. Col. Bland ... and now Col. Dye,” said Cornett, who awarded the Army Commendation Medal to Bland for his time in command.
During his speech, Bland reminded the soldiers of the impact the brigade has on the Army by being the only quartermaster organization in the U.S. Army Reserve which is part of the Total Army School System.
“From my level I see the missions as they come down from DA, every [Army Reserve] unit has soldiers in your classes,” said Bland, who also told the soldiers that as a training organization, they shouldn't define success the same way operational and functional commands measure their accomplishments because the missions in those commands are more defined.
Dye said he was surprised that he'd been selected for the position but he was also honored. He told the soldiers that they're his family now that his wife is currently deployed to Afghanistan.
With a required strength of 765 soldiers, the brigade is made up of five subordinate Quartermaster battalions which provides Military Occupational Specialty reclassification and Noncommissioned Officer Education System training to Reserve and Active Component soldiers, as well as National Guardsmen in accordance with U.S. Army Training Doctrine Command Program of Instruction.
