MUARA, Brunei – The Arleigh-Burke class guided-missile destroyers USS Spruance (DDG 111) arrived in Muara, Brunei, Feb. 14, for a port visit as part of her maiden deployment to the Western Pacific.

This port visit represents the continued U.S. commitment to Southeast Asia while allowing sailors on board Spruance to experience a new and different culture. The visit also provides an opportunity to help strengthen the ties between two great nations.

“Spruance is honored to be in Brunei during the 30th anniversary of our countries’ diplomatic relations” said Cmdr. Dan Cobian, Spruance’s commanding officer. “My crew and I are very excited to explore Brunei while also showcasing the capabilities of our fine warship.”

While in Brunei, Cobian and U.S. Ambassador Daniel Shields met with 1st Adm. Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Abd Halim bin Mohd Hanifah, commander Royal Brunei Navy, to discuss the continued cooperation and strong partnership of the host and visiting nations. Brunei remains a strong partner in promoting security throughout the region.

Spruance is currently deployed to the 7th Fleet area of operations in the Pacific just as her namesake, Adm. Spruance, did during World War II. She continues to serve the needs of the Navy and United States while working to strengthen relationships with strategic partners in Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
