Afghan commandos kill 17, find two narcotics labs
PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Security Forces killed 17 insurgents during a combat operation Feb. 11 to locate a known Taliban commander and disrupt narcotics trafficking in Sherzad district, Nangarhar province.
Commandos and special forces soldiers of the 1st Special Operations Kandak were moving toward the Loya Termay village when insurgents attacked them from several positions with small-arms fire, rocket-propelled grenades and machine gun fire.
With assistance from U.S. forces, the commandos repelled the attack killing 17 insurgents in the process. There were no reports of civilian casualties during the operation.
ANSF discovered two narcotics processing facilities finding more than 20 kilograms of opium. They also confiscated a small weapons cache.
Afghan National Army commandos are an elite group of soldiers capable of conducting high-risk missions to disrupt insurgency networks. They conduct clearing operations that enable conditions for improved security, governance and development in remote villages.
