CAMP FOSTER, Okinawa – The room fills with cheers and applause as the Seattle Seahawks score yet another touchdown, further securing their victory in NFL Super Bowl XLVIII.
Students from the University of the Ryukyus visited the Ocean Breeze club on Camp Foster Feb. 3 to watch the Super Bowl with service members.
The visit allowed the students to experience the game with Americans, who shared their love for the game, as well as experience some of the American culture, according to Aya Toyama, a public affairs assistant for the U.S. Consul in Naha, Okinawa.
“We are introducing American culture to the people of Okinawa,” said Toyama. “Allowing them to see football, one of the most popular American sports, is a wonderful opportunity for them to do so.”
The students were very appreciative of the chance to watch the Super Bowl, as well as visit an American military base, according to Yoshikazu Kirihara, a student at the university.
“Whatever opportunity we have to mingle with others and learn from them is important,” said Kirihara. “We love the atmosphere around such a game and to be around people who love this (game) is really enjoyable.”
For the Marines attending, it was a good way to integrate the two cultures together, according to Lance Cpl. James M. Betancourt, an administrative specialist with the Installation Personnel Administrative Center, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Corps Base Smedley D. Butler, Marine Corps Installations Pacific.
“Sharing this experience about something we love doing is a great way to connect,” said Betancourt. “I think that it's important we share positive experiences with each other.”
After the game, the students returned to their homes, grateful for the opportunity to see the Super Bowl and the time they spent with the Americans, according to Kirihara.
“I am happy to have spent this time here and meet new people,” said Kirihara. “It was fun seeing the game with so many football fans.”
