FORT GORDON, Ga. - The 359th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade welcomed a new commander during a stormy Saturday change of command ceremony at the brigade’s headquarters at Fort Gordon, Ga., Jan. 11.

Col. William T. Peterson took command of the Army Reserve signal brigade from Col. James M. Chatfield Jr., after Chatfield held the mantle for nine months.

Maj. Gen. Lawrence W. Brock III, commanding general of the 335th Signal Command (Theater), praised Chatfield for his accomplishments during his tenure, and welcomed Peterson.

“Good luck and God speed...you’ve got a wonderful group of men and women here behind you,” Brock said, addressing Peterson.

Peterson comes to the 359th TTSB after serving as the command inspector general for the 80th Training Command in North Chesterfield, Va. His previous assignments include the Chief Information Officer - Operations and Plans Adviser for the Iraqi Assistance Group at Camp Victory in Iraq, and commander of the 3rd Battalion (Signal), 108th Regiment, 2nd Brigade (Signal), 100th Division (TS), in Augusta, Ga.

The 359th TTSB commands more than 1,400 Soldiers located in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Maryland.

Units that fall under the 359th TTSB include the 324th Expeditionary Signal Battalion, the 392nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion, the 490th Tactical Installation Network Company, the 982nd Combat Camera Company (Airborne), the 300th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment and both the 317th and 45th Military History Detachments.

“Work hard,” Peterson said, speaking to the troops of the 359th TTSB.

“Get your education, both military and civilian, and be leaders. I
believe that all soldiers are leaders and we have to show that we are leaders each and every day whether we’re in uniform or out of uniform.”

In parting, Chatfield’s words of advice were to keep true to the Army values and to live the words of the “Soldier’s Creed.” He said that despite any mistakes he’s made along the way, the Army values have left him with a clear conscience.

“In all you do in the Army, please keep in mind that ours is a calling of service to our country and our fellow countrymen,” Chatfield explained. “When I’m able to put my head to my pillow at night, I look back and can say I tried to keep true to that trust of the people of our country and those values of our institution, and I’ve slept well.”

The mission of the 359th TTSB, which has lineage dating back to 1944, is to support signal operations all over the world and to provide theater-level communications for units in the field, said Peterson.

The Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 359th TTSB returned from a deployment to Afghanistan in March 2011. Currently, more than 150 soldiers from the brigade’s subordinates units are deployed to Afghanistan.

With the operational tempo of the brigade, the Nation needs us to be ready, said Peterson. “I don’t want us to be great. I want us to be exceptional.”
