ROYAL AIR FORCE LAKENHEATH, England - With the holiday season in full swing, airmen from the 492nd Fighter Squadron took time to give back to charities of the local community during the Duxford Christmas Party at the Imperial War Museum, Dec. 14, 2013.
More than 270 people packed the venue, as members of the 492nd FS ran a series of stations including food, arts & crafts, ring toss, fishing, a pilot dress-up station and a gift exchange during a special meet-and-greet with jolly ol St. Nick.
“It’s a great chance to give these kids a Merry Christmas,” said Capt. Zach Shuler, 492nd FS department of training assistant. “These charities do so much for the children year-round, so it feels really good to give them a break.”
For the past seven years, the 492nd FS has assisted in giving back to the community, while also maintaining local military historical traditions.
“We’re a part of the community and I enjoy coming out and having the chance to give back,” said Capt. Jimmy Hayward, 492nd FS executive officer.
Established during World War II, the Duxford Christmas party was created by the RAF Duxford 78th Fighter Group to supply gifts and support to children from the London area who were orphaned by the war.
“These Airmen are a solid link between the past and present,” said Richard Ashton, IWM Duxford director. “They have helped a tradition that has been done by the American GI’s for over 70 years continue to flourish.”
