SAN DIEGO – Santa arrived to a chorus of squeals of delight and excitement for the children and families of Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group One at Turner Field on NAB Coronado December 8th.

The annual event was hosted by EODGRU-1 and featured multiple bounce houses, cookie decorating, kick ball and other fun-filled events.

“This annual event recognizes the relationship between our support units, training units and deploying units: while separate and unique, they all contribute to the same mission and operational readiness of EOD Group ONE,” said Jennifer Walther, Family Readiness Group Coordinator.

Families were invited from every subordinate command across the region, especially those whose loved ones are deployed during the holiday season.

“It is very important that we take time to celebrate our families, and the holidays offer a perfect opportunity to do so,” said Cmdr. Martin Anderson, EOD Group ONE chief staff officer. “Our families provide the support system necessary for our EOD techs and divers to deploy and conduct operations around the world. Today is about showing them how much they are appreciated.”

The event is successful as a result of the efforts of the command Family Readiness Groups, ombudsmen, and many spouses who volunteer their time and support. Toys and games for Santa to handout to the children, were graciously donated by Operation Homefront.

All the children received a gift and each had the opportunity to pose for photos with Santa during the event.

According to Walther, “The Kids Christmas party is a way to appreciate the contributions of all our service members and families to the readiness of EOD Group ONE as a whole.”

EODGRU-1 provides operational EOD capability as required for the location, identification, rendering safe, recovery, field evaluation and disposal of all explosive ordnance including chemical and nuclear weapons within the boundaries of Third, Fourth, Fifth and Seventh Fleets.
