Afghan forces strike first in Panjwai

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Afghan National Security Forces dealt a significant blow to Taliban fighters during a three-day clearing operation that ended Dec. 9 in Panjwai district's Mullah Madi and Lakani villages.

Afghan National Army special forces, commandos of the 3rd and 6th Special Operations Kandaks, and National Directorate of Security officials captured a suspected Taliban leader, destroyed nine roadside bombs and found various bomb making materials.

“Our soldiers conduct these missions to keep our people safe and destroy the Taliban,” said Maj. Abdul Manan, 3rd SOK commander. Manan went on to explain that villagers told ANSF the location of the roadside bombs.

"I encourage villagers to support our Soldiers by any means necessary,” explained Manan.

Locals directed the security forces to a hut they believed to be in use by the Taliban to carry out attacks. There, NDS officials found the improvised explosive devices already rigged to explode.

ANSF took proper documentation of the IEDs, rendered them safe, and cleared the remainder of the compound without incident.

The captured leader is in the custody of NDS officials.
