Combined Joint Task Force-82
BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – Elements of the 1st Brigade, 205th Afghan national army corps, along with coalition Soldiers, again repelled enemy fighters who gathered for an attack at Firebase Anaconda, Oruzgan province, this evening.
This was the second probing attack of the day. Several Taliban were killed in this latest attack, in addition to the four killed in this morning's attack. The insurgents attacked an Afghan national army patrol that was en-route to Firebase Anaconda. They were met with crippling direct fire from Afghan national army and coalition forces inside the firebase.
The Taliban retreated, leaving behind the dead and two-wounded comrades. The wounded combatants were treated at the firebase medical center and processed as detainees.
This was the third time this week Firebase Anaconda was directly attacked by insurgents. This morning, a small group of insurgents attacked the compound, losing four men in a believed probing attack.
On Tuesday, a large group of insurgents attacked from three directions but were also repelled. Recent reporting of insurgent losses from Tuesday's engagement rose dramatically today; more than 50 insurgents are now believed killed from Tuesday's failed attack.
Coalition leaders believe these actions could possibly be a rehearsal for a much bigger attack, possibly an attempt to completely overrun the post.
"The insurgents continue to conduct direct, frontal probing attacks, but they have yet to see any success in this method," said Army Capt. Vanessa R. Bowman, a Combined Joint Task Force- 82 spokesperson. "We expect them to culminate with a large full-scale attack in the near future and we are prepared to kill or detain any Taliban naive enough to believe they can successfully attack our base."
