MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - With the ongoing construction taking place aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River, you may have noticed there is no longer a light at the intersection of Schmidt Street and Curtis Road (the Wendy’s intersection) that directs pedestrians when they may cross the street.

There is still however a crosswalk there and it has come to the attention of the air station senior leadership that motorists and pedestrians alike may be unaware of who has the right of way and what their responsibilities are.

North Carolina General Statute 20-155 states, “The driver of any vehicle upon a highway within a business or residence district shall yield the right of way to a pedestrian crossing such highway within any clearly marked crosswalk, or any regular pedestrian crossing included in the prolongation of the lateral boundary lines of the adjacent sidewalk at the end of a block, except at intersections where the movement of traffic is being regulated by traffic officers or traffic direction devices.”

“We are having a problem with motorists not stopping for the pedestrians,” said Barry Johnson, New River Traffic Safety Manager. “Curtis Road is the main road on the air station and there are regularly a large number of pedestrians who cross the road from Camp Geiger to access the Marine Corps Exchange and Wendy’s.”

Air Station Order 5550.2N, Chapter 5, Paragraph 5, Section C, requires drivers to yield the right of way to pedestrians in a crosswalk. Violation of the order could result in four points and/or a 30-day suspension on the driver’s base driving privileges.

“I also would like to remind pedestrians that they need to make sure the drivers see them and they start stopping or stop before the pedestrian starts to cross the street,” said Johnson. “We do not want to have anyone accidentally struck by a vehicle as they are crossing the street.”
