ØRLAND, Norway - The E-3A Component engaged in a self-generated exercise on Nov. 4, 2013.

For 18 days, the Component conducted Magic Viking 13-02, an exercise designed to test the Component’s ability to meet its NATO Response Force (NRF) commitment. The Component also went through ‘alert state’ procedures to ensure it can secure the main operating base.

“As a High Readiness and Deployable Force unit of the NRF, it is important that the Component stays ready,” said Maj. Gen. Andrew M. Mueller, Component commander. “Over the past three weeks, the Component validated its readiness by practicing many of the processes we would utilize if we needed to employ to support the NRF.”

On Nov. 18, the Component initiated the execution portion of the exercise with the movement of five aircraft and 120 personnel to Norway. Three E-3As and 93 Component members along, with two KC-135 Stratotankers and 27 Airman from the Ohio Air National Guard, deployed to Forward Operating Location Ørland, Norway.

After arrival, the Component executed three different missions. Alpha crew orbited over Iceland and provided support for Iceland’s Quick Alert Response; Bravo crew orbited in Norway and worked with three Norwegian fighter squadrons; and Charlie crew orbited over England and took part in U.S. Air Force exercise ‘Determined Hunt’.

‘Endex’ for Magic Viking was called on Nov. 22 after all aircraft and personnel returned to Geilenkirchen.

“I want to congratulate the team on an outstanding effort,” General Mueller said. “Many thanks to all the Component members for a job well done.”
