FORT WAYNE, Ind. - More than 1,000 veterans received a free meal at Golden Corral on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 9, in honor of their service.
Providing food was not the only goal of the nights’ festivities, five members of Chapter 40 of Indiana Disabled American Veterans, was also in attendance to raise funds for disabled Veterans. DAV is a nonprofit organization serving to empower disabled veterans to lead high quality lives with respect and dignity by linking veterans to outreach programs and benefits.
Tom Lesley, a member of DAV and retired Air Force veteran said he enjoyed helping with the event.
“After I had to retire from my civilian job, I needed to be involved in other things and this seemed like the place to do that,” said Lesley, who worked in the Air Force as a personnel affairs specialist. “I figured if I can help, I better do it while I can.”
One veteran, retired Army Sgt. 1st Class, Jackie Taylor, attended the event with her family. After 28 years of being in the service, Taylor was happy to relax and enjoy the meal with not only her family, but also other veterans she didn’t know, said Taylor.
“You get to meet different people from different branches of the military because they sit you at tables with a lot of people you don’t know and you get to meet and talk with them,” said Taylor.
After the rush of patrons and patriots slowed, members of the DAV sat down to count how much the event raised.
General manager, Drew Robertson, for Golden Corral stated they served more than 1,200 meals and raised more than $2,500 by the end of the night for DAV.
