NEWPORT, R.I. (NNS) -- Center for Service Support (CSS) announced the selection of its 2013 Instructors of the Year in the mid-grade, senior and officer categories Nov. 8.
Capt. Mark S. Murphy, CSS commanding officer praised those nominated and selected.
"The quality of all nominees was exceptional,” said Murphy. “Their contributions to the CSS mission and commitment to our learning sites and our sailors are immeasurable. Choosing a single individual in each category was extremely difficult because they’re all very deserving."
“I’m extremely pleased to announce the results of the CSS Yearly Military Awards for our training domain,” said Murphy. “As always, the competition was extremely close and all nominees were most deserving.”
The selected sailors and Marines are:
Junior Enlisted Instructor of the Year (Green Team)
Sgt. Justin Schmidt, Naval School of Music (NSOM)
Mid-Grade Enlisted Instructor of the Year
Culinary Specialist 1st Class (SW/AW) Melissa Hartley, CSS Learning Site Fort Lee.
Senior Enlisted Instructor of the Year (Green Team)
Gunnery Sgt. James Stanley, NSOM
Senior Enlisted Instructor of the Year
Chief Ship’s Serviceman (SW/AW) Jodi Ahner, Naval Technical Training Center Meridian (NTTC)
Officer Instructor of the Year
Lt. Luke Hafner, Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS)
CSS Sailor of the Year
Fire Controlman 1st Class (SW/AW) Dario Huron, CSS Learning Site Fort Lee
According to Command Master Chief (SW/SCW/AW) Ray Rosado the fleet and the entire Navy benefits from good instructors who promote the ‘Brilliant on the Basics,’ and Sailorization.
“Our instructors welcome responsibility and lead by setting strong examples with pride, character, and loyalty,” said Rosado. “They’ve all demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership, our core values, and the Navy ethos. Our Navy is the strongest and most technologically proficient in history and we must continue to build upon that illustrious legacy. These instructors and our Sailor of the Year really enhance our legacy and keep our outlook optimistically bright.”
All of the chosen Sailors will compete for Naval Education and Training Command (NETC) Instructor of the Year honors in their respective category.
CSS and its learning sites provide Sailors with the knowledge and skills needed to support the fleet's warfighting mission. More than 300 staff and faculty work hand-in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensure training is current and well executed on behalf of 10,000 sailors who graduate from CSS courses annually in the administration, logistics and media communities.
