MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - After lengthy military careers and gallant combat actions in Vietnam, Medal of Honor recipients, Maj. Gen. James Livingston and Col. Harvey “Barney” Barnum visited Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune to encourage Marines and families to look out for their own mental health and for each other.
They brought a message of hope to the Camp Lejeune community through their Warrior Talks and a spouse seminar, Oct. 29 and 30.
Speaking to Marines and military families at the Russell Marine and Family Center, they shared their experiences and encouraged the military community to reach out for help through programs and services available if needed.
Barnum and Livingston said many of the programs and services available to service members today were absent during their time in the military.
Marine Corps Community Services has many programs available to help families with the many hardships and transitions they face. From classes to help manage stress and how to strengthen a relationship, to individual counseling and post traumatic stress disorder support groups.
“If you don’t think we came home carrying baggage, you’re wrong,” said Barnum. “There are problems and there are people who can help you. We want you to get the best. We want you to get the help we couldn’t.”
Barnum said most Marines think they are invulnerable, comparing his fellow service members to action heroes.
“You think nothing can happen to you, but underneath that uniform you are a human being,” said Barnum.
Livingston encouraged seeking help if needed.
“I want you to have the guts to step up to the plate,” said Livingston.
The bravery exhibited by Marines in combat is the same as what it takes to help a fellow Marine through a crisis, he added.
“There is no excuse,” said Livingston. “Love your fellow service member at home the way you would love him if he were down in combat.”
