CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Halloween was celebrated a little differently at the 2nd Maintenance Battalion compound here, Oct. 31.

Marines with 2nd Maint. Bn., Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd Marine Logistics Group did not dress up in costumes or go "trick or treating."

They kept their esprit de corps during a field meet through a series of physical challenges.

“Every fall, 2nd Maint. Bn. holds a field meet which lasts half a day, and we also want to get the Marines home to their families early for Halloween,” said Lt. Col. Craig C. Clemans, a Valparaiso, Ind., native and commanding officer of the battalion. “It just made sense to make the most efficient use of our time by having them both on the same day.”

Each company in the battalion selected a few Marines for each event to battle their comrades.

“Respite from the daily routine, it’s an opportunity to interact with Marines outside their immediate work places,” said Clemans. “Marines get to see the character and true colors of the Marines to the right and left of them, and that breeds confidence to overcome whatever challenges that lie ahead.”

Some of the events of the day were a pull-up challenge, Mission Oriented Protective Posture clothing exchange, egg relay and tug-of-war.

“I think it’s a good way to start Halloween,” said Cpl. Vincent M. Aguilar, a Cleveland, Tenn., native and supply administrator with Retrograde and Redeployment in support of Reset and Reconstitution Operations Group, 2nd MLG. “We are having fun, building camaraderie through competition, so I think it’s going well.

“My favorite part is the competition between each other and doing the Spartan challenge,” said Aguilar. “It’s definitely a test.”

At each station, companies could either score five points for first place, four points for second place, and three points for third place. After all 13 challenges were completed, the totals were added up to see which company had the highest score.

Engineer Maintenance Company, the smallest of the seven companies, came out on top and won first place.

“I am extremely proud of the Marines,” said Clemans. “Today the Marines competed for something greater than self. They represented their companies. The warrior spirit on display during a number of the events was patently Marine Corps; not to be found anywhere else in the world.”

During the competitions, volunteers with the battalion’s family readiness program cooked hot dogs and hamburgers, and handed out snacks and beverages.

“We could only enjoy this day because we have trained so hard to be ready,” said Clemans. “In word and deed, the battalion stands most ready when our country is, perhaps, least ready. Preparedness is worth pausing to recognize, and worth celebrating. We are ready to do our country’s bidding on foreign shores if called upon. Tomorrow we will resume training for that day.”
