MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Halloween is widely known to be full of terror and frights. It is the one day out of the year where children can dress up as their favorite super hero, a princess, or anything their hearts desire.
But, it is not a day where safety should be forgotten. Small, but easily overlooked things, such as costumes, candy and placement of decorations should taken into consideration during this holiday.
When taking your child’s costume into consideration, make sure there are no trip hazards, that it’s age-appropriate and that any accessories that may be used, such as swords, are made of soft materials, said Jennifer C. Anderson, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron family readiness officer.
Fake weapons should also not look too much like real ones so there is no confusion.
Anderson also recommended that children should wear something reflective, like a flashlight or a glow stick.
“Atlantic Marine Corps Communities highly recommends that parents, children, and even pets wear reflective material while out trick-or-treating,” said Dixie Lanier Johnson, AMCC strategic marketing manager. “We also ask that people traveling via car exercise extreme caution and travel below the posted speed limit. We invite all of our residents to walk through our communities versus driving and follow their children this Halloween.”
Anderson also said to physically check and inspect candy collected from strangers before allowing children to eat it.
“Look for opened candy, items that are not age-appropriate such as hard candy for young children, items that may contain ingredients your child is allergic to and homemade goodies, unless you know who made the item and feel comfortable allowing your child to eat it,” said Anderson.
Hours for trick-or-treating aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and the air station are Oct. 31 from 5 to 9 p.m.
“Atlantic Marine Corps Communities encourages all of our residents to look out for your neighbors,” said Johnson. “AMCC recommends parents visit the link to take in all of the reminders about Halloween safety. http://www.cdc.gov/family/halloween/.”
