FORT PICKETT, Va. - Thirteen members of Underwater Construction Team 1 Construction Dive Detachment Alfa stationed at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story, Va., conducted Tactical Training Exercise at Fort Pickett, Va., from Sept. 24 to Oct 4. The purpose of this exercise was to hone their specialized skill set in a variety of Tactics, Techniques, and Procedure (TTP’s) common to the Underwater Construction Teams.

“This training is conducted every 18 months during our Detachments Fleet Readiness Training Plan (FRTP)” said CE1 (SCW/DV) Scott Irving, Leading petty Officer (LPO), CDD/A. “We trained through different scenarios that we may encounter in a tactical environment.”

The Seabee Divers trained and conducted Tactical Convoy Operations, Military Operations Urban Terrain (MOUT), black-out driving, EPW/POW (combative and non-combative) weapons familiarization and qualification, and various dynamic small arms and heavy weapon employment drills.

“The mission of the UCT Dive Detachment would be highly compromised if only one or two members were taken as casualties,” said BU1 (SCW/DV) Joseph Biccum. “In a small group, it’s important that everyone is a proficient marksman and knows that at any given time someone’s has his back.”

Some of the graded scenarios that CDD/A worked through were tactical movements through hostile areas, Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) of a 144 foot by 16 foot concrete bridge, underwater object utilizing hydrographic survey equipment, body recovery and local populous relation building efforts all incorporated in a fourteen day period. While conducting these scenarios, the detachment had to maintain a 360 degree security posture and deter possible threats that could contribute to mission failure.

“This training will benefit our CDD greatly,” said BU2 (SCW/DV) Derrick Farias. “Not only have we built up our proficiency in our tactics and techniques, we’ve worked on immediate action procedures to neutralize threats with minimal risk of casualties so the underwater construction tasking can be executed given the current threat condition.”

UCT ONE provides responsive inshore and ocean underwater construction, inspection, repair and maintenance to ocean facilities for Navy, Marine Corps and Joint Forces engaged in military operations.
