BAGHDAD – The top general in Iraq awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross to three Army pilots in Baghdad, July 27.
Gen. David Petraeus, commander, Multi-National Force -Iraq, pinned the awards on Chief Warrant Officer Kristopher Hobt, Troop A, 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, and Chief Warrant Officers Micah Johnson and Allan Davison from the 1st Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, during a ceremony at the Multi-National Corps -Iraq headquarters on Camp Victory.
The Soldiers were recognized for their efforts in the rescue of Kiowa helicopter pilots, Chief Warrant Officers Mark Burrows and Steven Cianfrini of Troop C, 3/17 Cav., who were shot down in early July during a reconnaissance mission. Burrows and Cianfrini evaded enemy insurgents until Johnson and Davison were able to land their AH-64 Apache and fly the downed Kiowa pilots to safety.
Air Medals were also awarded to Chief Warrant Officers Edward Gamble and Tony Vanduynhoven, of Troop A, 3/17 Cav., Chief Warrant Officers Scott Tolan, Burrows, Cianfrini and Patrick Kelly of Troop C, 3/17 Cav., and Capt. Jason James of Troop D, 3/17 Cav., and Chief Warrant Officers Troy Mosely and Seung Choi of the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade
The 3/17 Cav. of the 10th Mountain Division deployed from Fort Drum, N.Y., and is now attached to Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division at Camp Striker, Baghdad. The 1/227 Aviation is part of 1st ACB operating out of Camp Taji, Iraq.
