RTC-Kandahar graduates first ALP class on historic day

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - A graduation ceremony was held at Regional Training Center Kandahar for the first Afghan Local Police class in the center’s history Oct. 10 in Dand District, Kandahar province.

ALP recruits trained at a temporary location in Zharay District prior to RTC-K opening its doors and classrooms to the village guardians from across the province.

RTC-K is now responsible for providing training to numerous Afghan police forces, however this training cycle marks the first time ALP have been trained at this regional center.

ALP students are issued Afghan police uniforms while they are in training, assimilating them into the training environment.

“This class of ALP is the first to be trained solely by Afghan Uniform Police instructors,” said AUP Maj. Hekmatullah Khan. “We have trained them well. They will go and bring security and stability to their villages and districts.”

“It is good that the ALP are trained here at RTC-K. This allows them to study and train alongside AUP and other Afghan National Security Forces that they may work with once they return to their villages,” said Khan.

ALP are playing an increased role in the security of Afghanistan by recognizing and engaging the Taliban when they surface in rural villages.

Since RTC-K was opened in 2004, the center has trained more than 22,000 students from 151 training cycles.
