MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – The men and women in uniform aren’t the only ones contributing to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing’s mission.
Breeanne Youngers, a Family Readiness Assistant with Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, joined the volunteer effort at the squadron in August. Though her time here has been short, she has already made a big impact through her efforts.
Her husband, Capt. Ryan Youngers, a maintenance officer-in-charge with VMFAT-101 and an Elkhart, Kan. native joined the unit last July. His wife’s involvement and preparedness keeps him focused, whether the mission is stateside or overseas.
Youngers volunteers to bring herself and the other spouses up to a mission-ready state.
“I hope I can help as a link between the support the squadron can offer and the families who need it,” she said. “They may not know how to access them, or they may just need someone to help them see the options they have.”
By soaking up all of the knowledge about support services, Youngers can pay it forward and pass that knowledge on to others.
“[I] can help get these resources to the families who need them,” she said. “Becoming more educated about some of these services and support has not only helped me feel more comfortable in the military lifestyle, but it has also made me want to make sure that others know about them, too.”
By disseminating information to the unit’s families, Youngers supports the Family Readiness Program’s mission of staying engaged and prepared.
“When families know they have options for support, it boosts morale for not only the families, but also the squadron as a whole,” Youngers said. “I hope the Family Readiness Program can be a safe place where people come to get the tools they need to succeed in this unique lifestyle.”
Much like how Marines have a military occupational specialty, spouses can take on a role that plays on their strengths. Youngers’ efforts have elevated the unit’s newsletter, putting her ideas to good use.
“Because I like to write and edit, working with the newsletter has been a good fit for me,” she said. “I try to make the newsletter as appealing and reader-friendly as possible, so more people will read the newsletter and know about events, support systems, and squadron happenings.”
She’s currently the squadron’s only Family Readiness Assistant, but Youngers implores other spouses to step up to the plate.
“I would encourage others to get involved,” she said. “Maybe then next time you’ll be the one with the information to share with your spouse, because you’ll be more educated about what’s happening.”
