FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- It was a still night and the moon was high in the sky. High on a hill a small team of Paratroopers maneuvered into their position. As their team was set, the assault element moved toward the objective: a simulated village on Lethem Drop Zone.
Boom…. the door was mashed open and the assault team maneuvered swiftly, clearing each room until the entire building was searched. From afar, this looks like utter chaos. For the Paratroopers assigned to 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, this was just another day at the office.
“The purpose of the exercise was to bring a platoon size element and successfully participate in nighttime live fire operations,” said Capt. David Yi, commander of Company B, 1-508 PIR.
During the exercise, the infantry platoon advanced and maneuvered around trees and through thick vegetation.
It’s not easy maneuvering through this stuff during the day, much less during the night, Yi continued. “Our mission was to position a support firing team, make an assault on a village and capture a ‘high value target individual’ and move out,” added Yi.
Communication during the exercise was paramount, said Yi. He commended his troopers for their hard work and dedication that ultimately contributed to the mission’s success.
“This type of mission gives the Troopers a little taste of reality,” said Yi. “Training at night gives us the edge over our enemies.”
