MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., has opened its doors every year to the San Diego Community for its world famous air show. This year they celebrate 100 years of the Marine Air Ground Task Force.
Although there will be no military aircraft flying, many new additions have been made to this year’s lineup, including some of the best civilian pilots in the world.
“This year were going to feature the Patriots Jet Team,” said Col. John Farnam, commanding officer of MCAS Miramar. “Their pilots include former Blue Angel, Thunderbird and Snowbird pilots.”
In addition to the Patriots Jet Team, the Red Bull Helicopter, the Oracle Challenger, and new addition, “Dusty” The Disney Plane, will also make an appearance, added Farnam.
Along with old favorites, there will be new added attractions for the first time aboard the air station for the public’s entertainment. Civilians will have the opportunity to register and race their own vehicles on a 1/8th mile drag strip set up on the air field.
“We are going to have Race Legal and they’re going to have legal drag racing on the flight line,” said Eva Marie Gutierrez, the MCAS Miramar marketing director. “They will be racing on Friday and Saturday for the air show.”
During the air show, people will also get a chance to interact with all Marines and Sailors aboard the air station and learn about the equipment they work with everyday.
Another exciting addition will be the one of the most highly anticipated, technologically advanced aircraft in aviation history.
“Our Marines and aircraft will be on the ground for the public to enjoy,” said Farnam.
The air show will include many other events for all ages to participate in and enjoy.
“We have a 5k run and 1k fun run both on the flight line where we launch our [F/A-18 Hornets] and [MV-22B Ospreys] every day,” said Farnam. “Also, we will have concerts featuring American Hitmen, Royal Bliss and Sawyer Brown.”
After the day events on Saturday, visitors can look forward to seeing Shockwave Jet Truck and watching the San Diego sky light up with fireworks and Wall of Fire.
The Marines of the air station have worked hard to bring this air show to life and welcome all the come out and take advantage of this once a year experience.
