SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - A Shelbyville, Ind., native, was recently selected as the 2013 Case Western Reserve University Young Alumni Award winner, making him the first graduate from the University’s School of Law to receive the prestigious award.

Maj. James R. Lisher II, formerly the Chief of International and Operations Law at U.S. Air Forces Central Command, received the award Sept. 27 during the homecoming luncheon at CWRU in Cleveland, Ohio.

He is currently enrolled in the Procurement and Contract Law LL.M. program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

According to the CWRU website “The Young Alumni Award recognizes an outstanding alumnus or alumna of Case Western Reserve University who is 35 years old or younger. The award is given to an alumnus or alumna who has demonstrated excellence in his or her professional field and/or has demonstrated service to his or her community, the public, or humanity, embodying the values, spirit, and pride of Case Western Reserve.”

“I am extremely humbled to receive this award,” said Lisher. “Being chosen for this honor among CWRU’s distinguished group of alumni is something I’m still trying to get my head around. I could not have achieved any of my success without the support of my supervisors, co-workers, parents, and the outstanding opportunity and support the Air Force JAG Corps has given me over the years.”

After graduating high school in 1997 from Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities, he decided to follow in his father’s footstep to become an attorney. He graduated from Wabash College, in Crawfordville, Ind., with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science (along with a double minor in History and Biology) in 2001 and graduated from law school at CWRU in 2004.

Lisher’s father, Jim Lisher, who’s a private practice attorney in Shelbyville, and his mother, Martha Lisher, a retired school teacher from the Shelbyville Middle School, always encouraged him to choose a career path where he could make a difference.

“I decided to join the Air Force after law school based on my experiences witnessing 9/11 during my first year in law school,” he said. “I wanted to do my part and support our national effort to prevent such atrocities from happening again.”

Lisher joined the Air Force in 2005 through the direct appointment program and applied his expertise at locations all over the world, to include: Holloman Air Force Base, N.M.; Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea; Royal Air Force Lakenheath, United Kingdom; Joint Base Balad, Iraq; and Shaw AFB, S.C. (U.S. Air Forces Central Command).

“Having the chance to use your law degree both to serve our men and women in arms and advise senior leaders on legal issues affecting national policy is a dream come true,” he said.

“On one day you ease our troops’ minds by providing personal legal advice enabling them to focus on the mission before them,” said Lisher. “The next you can be advising commanders on contingency plans and future operations to ensure we remain in compliance with the Rule of Law in all our endeavors. You have both the immediate satisfaction of helping a client deal with a personal issue, yet also the deep feeling of purpose by being a small part of a critical mission.”
