KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – The last time Jayson Altieri was with the 82nd Airborne Division, he served as a staff officer, platoon leader and company commander with what was then the 2nd Battalion (Assault) 82nd Aviation Regiment. Army Lt. Col. Altieri now returns to command the 2nd Battalion (Assault), 82nd Combat Aviation Battalion, known as Task Force Corsair.

Altieri assumed command of TF Corsair in ceremonies held July 20.

"Alteiri was hand-picked by the Army's senior aviator," said Army Col. Kelly Thomas, 82nd CAB commander. "[He] is the perfect officer and leader to continue the high standards and traditions already established and I'm certain that mission accomplishment will not skip a beat.

"Alteiri is the man who will keep this task force rolling along," said Army Lt. Col. Brian McFadden, outgoing commander.

McFadden served as interim commander after the early retirement of former Corsair commander, Army Lt. Col. George Huggins. McFadden resumes his duties as the deputy commander of the 82nd CAB, also know as Task Force Pegasus.

"[Brian] has been the right officer and leader for Corsair," Thomas said. "His leadership capability and professionalism have led this formation through the difficult loss of the Flipper 75 aircrew and continued instilling the war fighter ethos in every task force member and crew in the formation."

"Corsairs ... I am privileged to have had the sacred responsibility of leading you in combat," McFadden said. "I can think of no greater military honor than to have been a member of Task Force Corsair."

Corsair began as an aviation company in 1957 in the 82nd Abn. Div. Serving in numerous operations since then, Corsair is currently comprised of four companies as well as elements from TF Talon (3rd Battalion, 82nd General Support Aviation) and TF Atlas (122nd Aviation Support Battalion). Corsair took over aviation operations in Regional Command-South in February. To date, TF Corsair has conducted more deliberate combat operations than any other combat aviation task force in OEF.
