YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities, Yokosuka’s Nile C. Kinnick Red Devils went on the road for the first time this season and were triumphant in a 44-6 defeat of the Seoul American Falcons at Seoul American Sims Field aboard Yongstan Army Base, Sept. 14.
“I think our biggest concern was that it’s so difficult to play on the road,” said head coach Dan Joley. “Anywhere you go it’s a long trip, a flight or something. One of the things that a young team will do is they will get lost in the other aspects of traveling instead of being able to focus on football; they are worried about packing clothes or standing in lines and all those things that go with traveling. What we try to do is talk to them everyday to take advantage of this opportunity to just be together and talk football for three days.”
With the Falcon defense keying in on standout running back Latendre Paylor, keeping him at a modest 83 yards on 13 carries, the Red Devils took to the air by way of quarterback Dustin Wilson’s arm, going 11 of 18 for 166 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions, which included a 35 yard field goal. Wilson also rushed for 55 yards on 9 carries.
“It was one of those days when everything was clicking for Dustin. Great day,” said Joley, whose Red Devils are off to their best start since opening 5-0 in 1997, the third of their four-straight Kanto Plain Association of Secondary Schools title seasons.
The Red Devils opened the game fast, scoring twice in the first quarter with a 9 yard run by Wilson, which was soon after followed up with a 1 yard pass from Wilson to wide receiver Greg Bacon. With the missed PAT, the score stood at 13-0 Devils.
Kinnick broke the game open in the second quarter with Wilson’s 40 yard pass to wide receiver Marcel Daniels, followed by Wilson’s 35 yard field goal. He then connected with wide receiver DeAnthony Evans on two scores, from 17 yards and 30 yards out to end the half, 37-6.
Defensively, the Devils held the Falcons under 200 yards total offense, gaining most from running back Max Weekley, who ran for 100 yards on 20 carries, and John Stoll gained 68 yards on 14 carries, while scoring on a 3-yard run resulting in the Falcons only score.
Defensive End Tyler Shilton again came up big for the second-straight week, with seven tackles and linebacker Kyle O’Brien added 6 tackles. 3 fumbles were recovered and cornerback Marcel Daniels added an interception to aid in the shutdown of the Falcon attack.
“First off, I think it needs to be said that coach Joley called a heck of a game Saturday,” said defensive coordinator coach Andrew Warford. “I was overly impressed with the way our boys responded. They were business-like, professional and came ready to play. We had a few hiccups in the secondary but it was still an overall outstanding performance. Are we where we want to be collectively as a football team? No. You’re never there until the end of the season.”
Paylor, who had solid numbers for the day, would not be totally contained and scored on an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown beginning the 3rd quarter, making the score 44-0, which is where it stood at until the end.
After the game, the players had a few hours to go out in town and experience a little of Korean culture, purchasing snacks and gifts for family members.
“Not really into Korean food, but I got the chance to do some shopping outside the base main gate,” said offensive lineman Chris Deibel. “It felt really good to take a break, especially more so after winning the game.”
Nile C. Kinnick will continue on to it’s next road game in a rematch with the Zama Trojans at Naval Air Station Atsugi’s Reid Stadium, Sept. 20.
