YOKOSUKA, Japan - Fleet Activities, Yokosuka Nile C. Kinnick High finally defeated the Yokota High Panthers 55-27 for the first time in 15 years at Berkey Field, Sept. 6.

The Yokota Panthers, as the 2012 defending Far East Division I champion rode a 28-game, 14-season winning streak against Nile C. Kinnick; the last victory by the Red Devils was a 28-0 win on Oct. 16, 1998. That has ended.

“I don’t know if this sunk in you yet, but you did something special just like I told you that you would,” head coach Dan Joley said to the team after a Gatorade dunking upon completion of the contest. “When you go home tonight, I want you to remember this; I want you to remember every play. I want you to think about every man that did their job tonight. Everybody that sacrificed and when you show up on Monday, I want you to forget all about it. Great game but it is time to move on to our bigger goals!”

Running back Latendre Paylor rushed for a school record 371 yards on 30 carries and 4 touchdowns and quarterback Dustin Wilson completed 2 of 6 passes for 15 yards, 1 touchdown to wide receiver DeAnthony Evans. Wilson also added 116 yards on the ground on 9 attempts with 3 touchdowns. In total, the offense churned up 521 yards on 46 attempts.

“I think the offensive line was absolutely phenomenon able,” said head football coach Dan Joley. “They put 8 in the box for most of the night and we ran up the middle. So before you talk about Dre Paylor and before you talk about any other individuals, our offensive line was astounding today.”

The Kinnick defensive unit was disruptive, led by Tyler Shilton. He recorded 12 tackles, three for losses and Paylor, working from the cornerback position, added 9 tackles and 2 for losses.

For the senior team members, the game had so much meaning for them.

“This team deserves to go down in history,” said Wilson. “It might be a small thing to other people but to Kinnick High School, the program and everyone in this community, it’s a pretty big thing. I have two sisters that went to Kinnick and every single day I try to live up to them because they both won the Nile C. Kinnick award. That’s been my goal since freshman year; that’s why I participate in sports and school to the best of my ability; to dedicate myself every single day.”

Paylor was asked what it meant to become the schools’ all time single game leading rusher.

“It feels good,” said Paylor. “But I got to keep my head up and keep pushing forward. My offensive line did really well tonight. This game I did not have to cut so much because they were blocking so well that they opened up huge holes for me to run through. From there, I just used my speed to make things happen.”

Up next for Nile C. Kinnick is a road game against the Seoul American Falcons, scheduled for Sept. 14.

“We will not underestimate them because even though we beat them last year, every team gets better like we did,” said Paylor. “We will simply have to play to our maximum potential.”
