PARRIS ISLAND, S.C. - The All-Marine men’s golf team took home silver after four days on the links at The Legends at Parris Island golf course during the Armed Forces Golf Championships held Sept. 15-18.

Cpl. Addison Lambeth, a 25-year-old native of Greensboro, N.C., with Marine Helicopter Squadron 1 based in Quantico, Va., who shot the lowest score on the All-Marine team with a four-day total of 290 strokes.

The Marines’ six-member men’s team earned a combined score of 1,493, while the Air Force’s 1,464, landed them in first place. The Army’s men’s team scored third place with 1,515, and the Navy shot a combined 1,533.

For the women’s three-golfer teams, the Navy placed first with a combined total of 619; the Army came in second with 676; the Air Force landed third place with 716; and the Marines’ team shot a combined 818.

“It was a great personal experience,” said Capt. Sona Fleck, a 36-year-old Czech Republic native assigned to Parris Island’s general logistics section and a member of this year’s All-Marine golf team.

Prior to the championship, nearly 30 Marines from 10 bases around the globe teed off here for the All-Marine Team qualifications from Sept. 6-9, 2013, in hopes of earning a place on the team and competing against members of the Air Force, Navy and Army in the championship.

The golf course on Parris Island was built in 1947 and remodeled in 2000. It is currently ranked within the top five military golf courses in the continental United States. Parris Island has hosted the Marine championships for three consecutive years and is scheduled to host the next tournament in November 2014.

“This is probably the best course within the Corps,” said Chuck Culpepper, project officer with Marine Corps Community Services, South Carolina. “(The players) really look forward to coming down here.”

According to Culpepper, All-Marine sports exist to give the Corps’ elite athletes an opportunity to participate in competitive sports and help maintain a warrior mentality.
