Wallisville Lake Project now issuing waterfowl hunting permits
GALVESTON, TX, UNITED STATES
WALLISVILLE, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District’s Wallisville Lake Project Office staff are now issuing waterfowl hunting permits for the 2013-2014 season as part of the Waterfowl Management Program’s hunting season.
“If you plan to hunt at the Wallisville Lake Project during the 2013-2014 waterfowl season, you must obtain a permit,” said Supervisory Natural Resources Manager Richard Long, USACE Galveston District. “Putting safety first and following safe hunting practices will allow for a great hunting experience and enjoyable hunting season.”
According to Long, waterfowl hunting permits are free of charge and can be obtained at the Wallisville Lake Project Office. With local, state and federal laws enforced on all Corps-managed lands, Long adds that it is every hunter's responsibility to know and understand the rules and regulations before heading to a favorite hunting spot.
Before hunting, Long advises hunters to check with Texas Parks and Wildlife concerning state regulations, hunting seasons and bag limits; contact the Wallisville Lake Project Office at (409) 389-2285 or view the USACE regulations at http://www.swg.usace.army.mil/Locations/WallisvilleLakeProjectOffice.aspx.
The purpose of the permit process is to both increase hunters’ education of Corps’ rules and regulation while hunting on federal land and to accurately obtain demography data regarding the hunting public at Wallisville.
Located 40 miles east of downtown Houston at the Trinity River and Interstate 10, the Wallisville Lake Project is designed to primarily prevent the intrusion of saltwater up the Trinity River in order to conserve fresh water and to protect fresh water intakes for local municipalities, including the city of Houston.
In addition to protecting the fresh water supply, the project supports navigation of commercial and recreational boats, serves as a water supply, is a favorite recreational destination among Houstonians and supports an array of fish and wildlife habitats.
