HERAT PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Commandos from the 9th Special Operations Kandak killed four insurgents Sept. 9 in Herat province’s Kushk district.
Three insurgents armed with machine guns, shoulder-fired grenades and mortars ambushed the commando patrol near Forward Operating Base Gilbert and Fazlo Lak village.
The commandos returned fire, killing one insurgent and wounding another. The third gunman fled.
The Afghan commandos continued their convoy and were ambushed again. This time the insurgent attack was initiated with a roadside bomb followed by small-arms fire. The commandos identified their attackers, returned fire and killed three more militant fighters.
“We proved that our commandos can conduct operations against our enemies anywhere and anytime we want to,” said Col. Mohammad Farid Ahmadi, commander of the Afghan National Army’s 2nd Special Operations Brigade.
The roadside bomb immobilized one vehicle and mortally wounded a commando, who died shortly after being medically evacuated to a nearby Afghan National Army hospital.
“Our fallen comrade’s memory will live on with us,” said Ahmadi. “Commandos know about the dangers and sacrifices that they may have to make one day. We will gladly sacrifice our lives for the stability and safety of our country.”
