North Dakota Air National Guard to Mark Changes with Ceremonies
FARGO, N.D. - Back-to-back ceremonies Saturday at the North Dakota Air National Guard base in Fargo will position the 119th Wing for its future.
In the first event, at 2:30 p.m., Col. Ronald Solberg will be promoted to the rank of brigadier general. He will become the state's only currently serving Air National Guard general and one of only four generals in the entire North Dakota National Guard.
Following the ceremony, the Air Guard will commemorate a transition as squadrons within the 119th Wing are activated or redesignated in preparation for a new mission. The 119th Maintenance Group will be redesignated as the 119th Intelligence Group, and the 177th Airlift Squadron will be redesignated as the 177th Intelligence Squadron. The Airlift Squadron flew C-21A Learjets while the Maintenance Group kept the aircraft operational. The last C-21 left the base Aug. 27, and no manned aircraft are currently anticipated as a replacement mission. The redesignation of the units serves as the first step in what is expected to be a lengthy process of retraining to take on the new intelligence mission.
In addition to the two units being redesignated, the 176th Intelligence Squadron and 119th Intelligence Support Squadron will be activated during the event, which will include a traditional flag ceremony that originated in the 18th century.
While the transition of jobs and missions at the base will be a significant change, the number of personnel serving in the Air National Guard is expected to remain stable.
