New Kabul Bank opens branch on ANA base in Sangin, third in Helmand Province

    SANGIN DISTRICT, AFGHANISTAN

SANGIN DISTRICT, Afghanistan - New Kabul Bank opened a new branch location at Forward Operating Base Nolay, Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Sept. 2.

The bank already has two established branches in the province: one branch in Lashkar Gah, the provincial capital, and one branch on Camp Shorabak, an Afghan National Army base adjacent to Camp Leatherneck.

Soldiers needing to make bank transactions had to travel to Camp Shorabak prior to the branch opening. The trips sometimes last weeks and caused interruptions in their work schedules. The soldiers also risked insurgent and improvised explosive device attacks.

“Every time a convoy goes to Shorabak, there are possibilities of getting attacked,” said Afghan National Army Capt. Saboor, the 2nd Brigade, 215 Corps operations officer. “The convoys and soldiers who leave this base are needed here for operations and it doesn’t make sense for the soldiers to be away for a period of time or to put lives at risk.”

The bank will provide the Afghan National Security Forces within Sangin the ability to transfer, deposit and wire money. One manager and six bank tellers will operate the bank six days a week.
Saboor played a significant role in the establishment of the bank. In November, Saboor met with the 2nd Brigade Security Force Assistance Advisor Team and stressed the need for a bank. He stressed the bank would “keep the soldiers in the fight against the enemy and help improve the morale of the brigades’ soldiers.”

In January, Saboor met with leaders of the ANA’s 215 Corps and submitted an official request for the bank. Bank officials reviewed his request and decided Sangin was an ideal location for the bank.

Saboor said the opening of the bank is another example of how Afghanistan has changed and Sangin is more stable.
