KAPISA PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Afghan National Army commandos from the 1st Special Operations Kandak detained 12 insurgents Aug. 28 in Kapisa province’s Tagab district.
Afghan commandos carried out the mission to disrupt militant bombmaking and facilitation operations in the area. This is the third such operations 1st SOK commandos have conducted in the region since February. More than 35 insurgents were killed, numerous wounded and detained and several weapons stockpiles were found during these operations.
The operations demonstrate how Afghan National Security Forces have irreversibly taken the lead for Afghanistan’s security, underscoring the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s Tranche 5, Milestone 2013 announcement this summer.
“Commandos are the sons of this country,” said Lt. Col. Mussoud Stanakzai, 1st Special Operations Kandak commander. “We have conducted a successful operation with no civilian casualties that will hopefully help bring security and peace for the people living in the district.”
The commandos are an elite group who conduct high-risk operations in areas known to be enemy strongholds. They conduct counterinsurgency missions that assist national and local police in their efforts to increase security, governance and development.
All detainees have been transferred to the district’s National Directorate of Security.
No civilian casualties or significant structural damages were reported as a result of this operation.
