Afghan commandos kill insurgent, find explosives in Wardak

WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Commandos from the 6th Special Operation Kandak killed one insurgent, detained four and discovered 120 pounds of homemade explosives Aug. 24 in Wardak province’s Sayadabad district.

The commandos were patrolling the Gulabkhel village when insurgents opened fire with small arms and machine guns. They immediately returned fire, besting their attackers.

Afghan National Security Forces are working to neutralize insurgent activity and the Taliban footprint in Wardak, especially along Highway 1, Brig. Gen. Abdul Karim, Afghan National Army Special Operations Command commander said.

“We’re here for the continuation of security and defense in this country with one main aim -- to abolish terrorism universally,” Karim said. “It is the responsibility and duty of all Afghan Forces to uphold security.

The detainees were transferred to the National Directorate of Security.

No civilians were injured, and nor were reports made of structural damages due to the operation.

Afghan National Army Special Forces commandos are an elite group who conduct high-risk operations in remote areas known to be enemy strongholds. These counterinsurgency missions assist national and local police in their efforts to increase security, governance and development.
