NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Afghan commandos from 1st Special Operations Kandak captured a key insurgent leader during a clearing operation Aug. 22, in Nangarhar province’s Khogyani district.
The insurgent is a known bomb-maker and distributor for militants in the region. He and several armed gunmen opened fire on the Afghan patrol around 1 a.m. using machine guns and shoulder-fired rockets. The ensuing gun battle lasted nearly three hours, according to initial reports from the commandos.
One insurgent was wounded and several others were detained. The bomb-maker’s capture will reduce the amount of attacks on Afghan National Security Forces and greatly improve safety for local residents, Afghan National Army Commando Maj. Amiri, 1st SOK executive officer, said.
“I am very proud of my commandos and how they conducted the mission,” said Amiri. “They are well trained and always prepared. The area that we operated in was a dangerous area, and there were lots of insurgents living there.”
The engagement is part of a larger-scale operation that is still ongoing. Additional information will be released upon its completion.
