KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Commandos from 3rd Special Operations Kandak (SOK) discovered 15 pressure plate explosive devices in a clearing operation Aug. 11 in Kandahar province’s Panjwai district.
Commandos used the cover of darkness to move into the Mullah Madi village area by helicopter and began a dynamic search for Taliban combatants and equipment.
Commandos also found weapons, bomb-making materials, communications equipment, and vehicles. The 15 completed bombs were pressure-plate activated, designed to detonate when the victim steps on or drives over the device.
The Taliban used these bombs in the past to murder Afghan Local Police and innocent civilians across Kandahar province.
The operation demonstrated the commandos’ capability to disrupt insurgent activities without endangering civilians.
Commandos receive some of the toughest training available in order to fulfill their role in protecting and securing the people of Afghanistan from threats such as the Taliban.
