STURGIS, S.D. - Senior leaders from the South Dakota National Guard and Ellsworth Air Force Base were among hundreds of community supporters gathered at the Sturgis Community Events Center for the city’s proclamation of Military Appreciation Day on Tuesday, Aug. 6, during the 73rd annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

Sturgis Mayor Mark Carstensen read a proclamation dedicating this date in appreciation for the service and sacrifice of all the uniformed branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Nearly 400 bikers turned out in attendance for the event, which was held in conjunction with the annual Dakota Thunder Motorcycle Run.

The event also recognized Sturgis’ own Ernest (Ernie) Miller, 89, a U.S. Army World War II veteran, for his service to the nation. Staff Sgt. Miller served in the Pacific Theater from the spring of 1945 until the fall of 1946 and was stationed briefly on the Philippine Islands before ending up on the island of Kyota, Japan. Here he served in the Adjutant General Publications Department, where he published orders, discharge papers and performed other administration duties.

The SDNG’s Brig. Gen. Ted Johnson, director of the Joint Staff, and Command Chief Master Sgt. Jim Welch, senior enlisted leader, presented Miller with a commander’s coin on behalf of the Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, in appreciation for his service. Col. Gentry Boswell, deputy commander for the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth AFB, also presented Miller with a commander’s coin and U.S. flag.

The City of Sturgis, along with Ellsworth AFB and the SDNG, spearhead this annual event to pay tribute to a decorated war veteran. This short celebration allows all to reflect on the sacrifices that military members have made while protecting the freedoms of this great country.
