FORT JACKSON, S.C. – In the alphabet soup of Army organizations, DRM is where the money is stirred. The 81st Regional Support Command Directorate of Resource Management serves as the principal staff office for overall management of the RSC’s financial resources and manpower management actions.
DRM consists of a Finance division and four branches; Operations and Maintenance Army Reserve, Reserve Personnel Army, Manpower Management and Accounting Support. Overall they provide various avenues of financial support to supported units in the 81st RSC footprint, which consists of the nine southeastern states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
One of the biggest impacts the 81st DRM seems to have is the issues that arise with travel associated with the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration and Strong Bonds Programs. Many times a soldier and his or her family will go to an event and not have the knowledge of the intricacies within the Defense Travel System.
Someone from DRM is always at the events to assist the travelers.
“Our DRM is very customer-focused,” said Maj. Gen. Gill Beck, commander of the 81st. “And they have received great praise from various supported commanders and soldiers for their outreach at Yellow Ribbon and Strong Bonds events.”
New employees to the 81st have found dealing with DRM to be surprisingly pleasant. Eric Connor, the 81st Community Relations specialist, found that problems with his DTS and travel were with dealt with professionally and quickly.
“I worked with Darlene [Petinelli] for my DTS problems, he said. “And she helped me with a smile instead of a bad attitude.”
Director of Resource Management Paul Roseboro said there wasn’t enough time in a day to talk about all the great things his team does.
“As a directorate, we take the lead in a lot of initiatives and transformations that are going on out there,” said Roseboro. “It’s like a wheel. The tire on the wheel is important, but without spokes on the wheel the tire isn’t going anywhere. We’re like the spokes on the wheel.”
Roseboro believes that customer feedback is a better representation of his staff’s professionalism and dedication.
One of the biggest customers would be YRRP. According to Jeff Vaughan, who runs YRRP for the 81st, DRM is integral to their operation.
“They provide assistance with DTS, financial advisers for the attendees and they take care of the contracting for the vendors at all of our events,” he said Beck receives emails from the commanders of supported units, praising the DRM.
At a recent ceremony at Fort Jackson, one of the senior noncommissioned officers, Sgt. 1st Class Donald Parker, was recognized in front of his DRM co-workers for his efforts supporting the 143rd Expeditionary Sustainment Command. A letter from the 143rd commander, Brig. Gen. Bryan Wampler, was sent directly to Beck who shared it with the DRM team.
“What they do that’s very special is that they’re out there” said Beck. “The staff of DRM solves problems. They find solutions to help soldiers.”
