MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - With both teams battling for their first football season win, the Lejeune Bulldogs dug their cleats into the Liversedge Field turf and dominated the Tri-County Crusaders, 34-6 aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, July 27.
The Tri-County Crusaders traveled to MCB Camp Lejeune and went home with another loss, marking their season 0-3 so far.
The Crusaders gave up more than 100 points and scored six during their two previous season games.
Lejeune’s win over Tri-City left them with a season record of 1-1.
The Bulldogs set their sights on the Crusaders offense, forcing several turnovers and capitalizing on defense.
“Don’t forget we’re still Marines and sailors on that field,” said Gunnery Sgt. John Glaister, head coach of the Bulldogs. “Remember, the basics win championships.”
The Bulldogs began the game forcing a turnover and scored a touchdown with 10:34 left in the first quarter, signifying a long game ahead for the Crusaders.
“I have nothing to complain about,” said Glaister. “Our offense is running smooth and our defense is causing turnovers, which is all I ask for. Of course we made mistakes here and there, but overall we’re doing great.”
By the end of the second quarter, the Bulldogs were up 27-0, and were confident in their performance on the field.
Staff Sgt. Frank Bryant, the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, led his offense to 34 points against the Crusaders and held back the opponent’s defense while causing turnovers on offense.
“I’m just happy to be helping our defense out,” said Bryant “It’s all about the team, and we’ve all been doing well.”
Both teams ended the night with a prayer and speech from their coaches, and the Bulldogs walked away with bragging rights.
“I feel good about this game,” said Glaister. “We’re going to keep practicing, keep getting better and see what the season brings us.”
The Lejeune Bulldogs are slated to play the Wilmington Tigers at Liversedge stadium aboard MCB Camp Lejeune, Aug. 3.
