    19th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

UIJEONGBU, South Korea – Soldiers throughout the peninsula all came together despite the rain, mud, uneven terrain and hills to compete in the Eighth Army 2013 Best Medic Competition.

On July 22-24, 2013, in the course of 72 hours, the candidates of the 2013 Eighth Army Best Medic Competition have gone through rigorous events that tested their stamina and endurance both physically and mentally.

To include a written examination, advance land navigation, M4/M9 stress shoot, day and night combat medic lanes, urban assault course, an obstacle course, a physical challenge and several mystery events.

Throughout the competition these candidates traveled 25 miles on foot up and down mountains.

U.S. Forces of Korea command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Anthony W. Mahoney, served as the guest speaker for the event and said, “It’s medics like these that we need in our Army to fight on our teams and save lives in battle.”

Sgt. Raymond Hernandez and Spc. Joshua Yi, both with 568th Medical Company Ground Ambulance out of Camp Humphreys, 168th Multifunctional Medical Brigade, were 2013 the Eighth Army Best Medic winners who will advance to go and compete in the all Army Best Medic Competition at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, in September.

Hernandez said, ”Just going into the competition we just wanted to do the best that we could, go out there and push ourselves, we came out and we wanted to win and we did.”

Coming into the competition the candidates had to be mentally and physically ready to go through all of the obstacles they had to face.

While out on the obstacle course, Yi said, “I had to lean a lot [on] my partner, we had to support each other in order to make it this far and accomplish this goal that we set out to do.”

Being proud of what they came out here to do, putting all of their skills and training they learned and being able to perform them on the battlefield is what it takes.

First Sgt. Sharon D. Carson, first sergeant, 568th MCGA said, “I am very proud of my soldiers, they came out here and represent all of the medics, all of their hard work and training has paid off today and today is an awesome day to be in the Army.”

Mahoney said, “I am proud of the seven teams that came here and participated, they should leave here and go back to their units, and be proud of themselves for the hard work they have put in to become a better medics for their unit and the Army.”

Anyone who wants to do this can. All they have to do is set their mind and heart to doing it. Train, train and more training, they can accomplish anything they want no matter what their gender or rank is.
