FORT STEWART, Ga. - When you think of a sports rivalry, which one do you think of? Which sports rivalry is your favorite?

There are a lot of rivalries in sports. It's one of the things that keep sports prevalent.

You can go anywhere in this country, and the people in that region or town will say their local rivalry is the best or as they say, “the most heated.”

Rivalries aren’t limited to the local levels. On the national scene, there are many. I have listed some of the most heated or most recognized rivalries in each sport.

The first sport you may think of is football, baseball or basketball. There are some great ones in those sports, but other sports have some great ones as well.

Boxing may not be as popular as it once was, but in its heyday, it was built upon rivalries, especially in the heavyweight division. Number one has to be the Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier. Others include Ali vs. Ken Norton, Sugar Ray Leonard against Thomas Hearns, Evander Holyfield vs. Riddick Bowe and Holyfield vs. Mike Tyson.

College Football may be the home of the classic rivalries with so many rivalry games each year. But, can it be a true rivalry if one team always beat the other; maybe not.

Some college football rivalries that stand out include USC vs. UCLA, Georgia vs. Georgia Tech, Notre Dame vs. Michigan, Notre Dame vs. USC, Florida vs. Georgia, Alabama vs. LSU, Oklahoma vs. Texas, Army vs. Navy, Auburn vs. Alabama and Ohio State vs. Michigan. The oldest rivalry in college football is Lafayette vs. Lehigh at 145 games with the first meeting in 1884. Lafayette leads 76-64-5; that’s pretty even.

Professional football rivalries include Cowboys vs. Redskins, Cowboys vs. Eagles, Chiefs vs. Raiders, Patriots vs. Colts, Broncos vs. Chargers, Vikings vs. Packers, Packers vs. Bears, Steelers vs. Browns and Steelers vs. Ravens.

Baseball rivalries include the Braves vs. Mets, Yankees vs. Mets, Yankees vs. Red Sox and Dodgers vs. Giants.

College basketball rivalries include Indiana vs. Purdue, North Carolina vs. Duke, Syracuse vs. Georgetown, Louisville vs. Kentucky, Cincinnati vs. Xavier and Kansas vs. Missouri.
Professional basketball rivalries include the Lakers vs. Celtics, Piston vs. Celtics, Knicks vs. Pacers and Bulls vs. Pistons.
Hockey rivalries include the Flyers vs. Penguins, red Wings vs. Blackhawks, Maple Leafs vs. Canadiens, Penguins vs. Capitals and the Bruins vs. Canadiens.

Here are some rivalries in other sports:

Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus in golf; the two best horse race rivalries are Affirmed and Alydar three Triple Crown races in 1977 and Secretariat and Sham in 1973. Some tennis rivalries include Steffi Graf vs. Martina Navratilova, Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi, Roger Federer vs. Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams vs. Venus Williams.
