FORT BLISS, Texas – Little feet run around while little hands get into everything and little laughter fills the room until, that is, the children are gathered into a circle where they sit mostly quiet and kind of still. It is time for what many children love, to hear a story read to them, and what better place could there be to read stories than the library?
The Lt. Gen. Stanley R. Mickelson Community Library here brings children together for a free event of stories, songs, games and crafts twice a week: “Read Me a Story” is held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays for children up to 5 years old; and “Family Story Time” is at 10:30 a.m. Saturdays for children up to 6 years old. Both last for approximately an hour.
Each month has a different story theme: for June and July it has been “Have Book - Will Travel,” which teaches children about different cultures and countries around the world.
“We try to keep the books and craft games educational as well as fun,” said Meredith McKenzie, a Mickelson Library technician.
China was the story hour topic July 16 where “Chu’s Day,” a story about a panda, was read to the children along with teaching them about China. The event included gluing rice onto paper in the shape of the Chinese characters for the word "panda."
“It’s wonderful. They learned about another culture while hearing a fun story,” said Angela Aimar, a military spouse, after taking her children to the story hour for the first time.
“It is a great opportunity for the kids to get out and interact with their parents and other children,” said McKenzie.
The library requires parents to accompany their children to watch those little hands and little feet during story time, but all military and Department of Defense dependents are invited.
