CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Approximately 1,000 Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Battalion 6 departed here in a series of ceremonies from July 10 to 18, to deploy to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
While deployed for approximately six months, the battalion will form the nucleus of a larger unit, Combat Logistics Regiment 2. CLR-2 is currently responsible for providing tactical logistics support to units operating throughout Regional Command Southwest as they continue to advise and assist the Afghan National Security Forces.
The command and family readiness team of 2nd MLG and CLB-6 put together several gatherings for Marines and sailors to be able to properly say goodbye to their families. As Marines were counted and organized before boarding busses and beginning their journey, the difference in experience levels was apparent.
“Right now we’ve got quite a few [Marines] that are going on their first deployment and a lot of them are afraid of the unknown, like they don’t know what to expect,” said Mary Mathews, the family readiness officer for CLB-6. “And then we do also have a lot of more senior personnel going on their fourth or fifth deployment … So we’ve got a real wide mix of emotions that are going on.”
According to Maj Kirk M. Spangenberg, the CLR-2 operations officer, the battalion conducted several key training events prior to departing that prepared the group for the conditions in Afghanistan. After a 10-day field operation at Fort Picket, Va., and the Marine Corps’ Integrated Training Exercise in Twentynine Palms, Calif., “now we’re ready to go,” he said defiantly.
When the group arrives in Afghanistan, they will replace Combat Logistics Battalion 8 as the unit responsible for providing logistical support in support of RC Southwest. CLB-8 is scheduled to arrive home in the coming months.
