STRIKFORNATO welcomes Portuguese youth participating in the American-Portuguese Intercultural Youth Camp
OEIRAS, Portugal – On 15 July 2013, STRIKFORNATO hosted 35 Portuguese students between 16 and 18 years of age who were participating in the American-Portuguese Intercultural Youth Camp sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon.
The group was welcomed by Deputy Chief of Staff, Support, Colonel Peter E. Yeager (U.S. Marine Corps) and Portuguese Senior National Representative, Captain Paulo Paiva Lopes (Portuguese Navy). Later, they received briefings about NATO and STRIKFORNATO during which they had the chance to learn more about STRIKFORNATO’s mission and capabilities. Finally, the 35 students had a tour in the military compound and provided information about the history of the military base in Oeiras, Portugal.
The group was sent off by the STRIKFORNATO Chief of Staff, Rear Admiral Brad Williamson (U.S. Navy). Rear Adm. Williamson was very pleased to meet with the future leaders of Portugal. He said “STRIKFORNATO always has an open door to schools and other youth organizations. We welcome each opportunity to inform future leaders about our efforts for peace and security, and to support their educational programs in any way we can."
The U.S. Embassy in Portugal is holding two sessions of a fully-funded camp experience from July 13 to 20 and July 20 to 27 on U.S. culture and transatlantic relations and diplomacy. The visit of the group was helpful for the participants of the youth camp, highlighting the role of NATO and STRIKFORNATO in transatlantic relations and peace in the world.
