TARIN KOT, Afghanistan - The Uruzgan-based 4th Brigade, 205th Corps continues to march towards independence with 25 soldiers graduating from the first Afghan 60mm mortar course held in the province.

Conducted over two weeks, the 4th Brigade run course provided the soldiers with skills to employ the weapon, known for its light weight and handheld firing features, as they continue successful independent security operations across Uruzgan province.

The soldiers, representing all of the 4th Brigade’s infantry kandaks, applied their new skills to a live fire demonstration at Multinational Base Tarin Kot June 17.

Under the direction of their instructor the soldiers demonstrated fire techniques utilizing two mortar tubes.

Among the crowd who gathered on the range to witness the fall of the first rounds was the commander of the 4th Brigade, Col. Mohammad Rasul Khan (Colonel Kandahari)

Mortar course senior instructor, Sgt. J. Sarivan, says the addition of the 60 mm mortars has provided an important capability to their operations and the course has expanded the number of qualified instructors.

“The 4th Brigade kandaks can now use the 60mm mortar on its missions, which will be very useful,” Sgt. Sarivan said.

“Some of the qualified soldiers will soon be able to instruct others in the brigade on the new weapon.”

Following the demonstration, the course graduates received their certification holding them high with pride, while reaffirming their service to Afghanistan.

The introduction of the new 60 mm mortar will provide the soldiers of the 4th Brigade with an effective close support weapon as they continue operations against the increasingly fractured insurgency in Uruzgan.
