Furlough will impact Fort Lee gate hours, services

FORT LEE, Va. -- The Department of Defense civilian furlough period that begins July 8 and ends in September brings significant changes to access gate and customer service operations, as well as some community activities at Fort Lee. The following is an overview of the primary closures, cancellations or service realignments with the widest community impact, as well as those activities that will not be affected during the furlough:

- Operating hours are being reduced at most access gates and the Shop Road Gate will be fully closed. The new gate hours are:

- Lee Avenue: 6-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday; closed Friday-Sunday

- Mahone Avenue: 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily

- A Avenue: 6-9 a.m. and 3-6 p.m., Monday-Thursday; closed Friday-Sunday

- Shop Road: Always closed (commercial vehicles rerouted to Sisisky Gate)

- Sisisky Boulevard: Always open (main gate)

- Jackson Circle: Always open to staff, residents and authorized guests

- Temple Avenue: 5-8:30 a.m., Monday-Thursday; closed Friday-Sunday


- The bridge connecting 11th Street to the Ordnance campus across State Route 36 will be open to vehicular traffic at all times.


- The Fort Lee Commissary will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays during the furlough period. All other hours of operation will remain the same.


- Kenner Army Health Clinic's main facility on A Avenue will operate on a reduced schedule each Friday. Health care will be provided to permanent party active duty personnel at the Mosier Consolidated Troop Medical Clinic (Ordnance Campus) from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. with sick call from 6-8 a.m. Enrolled beneficiaries, including family members or retirees, with medical needs on Fridays should call [phone] to coordinate care with an on-call provider. Patients with medical emergencies should call 911 or report to the nearest hospital emergency room.


- The Department of Behavioral Health and Social Work Services will be available by appointment only Fridays at the main KAHC building - call [phone] to schedule. Patients must use the A Avenue parking lot / entrance.

- All Fort Lee hunting activities are cancelled on Friday during the furlough period. For more information, contact the game warden at [phone].

- The Privately Owned Weapons Range and all hunting areas at the Fort Lee Range complex will be closed on Sundays.

- The Army Community Service hours of operation will be 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday-Friday. On Fridays, ACS will be closed from 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. for lunch, and all customers - to include those seeking assistance from Army Emergency Relief - must have an appointment. All victim support services provided by Family Advocacy and the Sexual Assault Response Program will continue to be available at all times. For details, call [phone].

- The Army Education Center will be closed Fridays during the furlough. For more information, call [phone].

- Operating hours at all Child Development and Youth Centers on post remain the same. Authorized users who received a furlough notice may be eligible for a temporary discount for childcare services. For details, call [phone].

- All Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation facilities will maintain their regular hours of operation. Non-appropriated fund employees will not be furloughed.

- Normal operations will continue at all Fort Lee Exchange facilities, including the Xpress gas station, the shoppettes and all food service areas.

Customers should also keep work-hour guidelines in mind during the furlough period. Army civilian employees are not allowed to perform any official work on furlough days, including accessing email and/or accepting calls via government-provided mobile devices.

On regular, non-furlough days, all work schedules - with the exception of emergency services for health, life and safety - will be strictly limited to eight hours. Those scheduling appointments or requiring support during normal business hours are asked to plan ahead to avoid the inconvenience of not receiving the desired assistance because the service provider is required to cease his or her work.
