Nextel to shut down June 30

    FORT BRAGG, NC, UNITED STATES

FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Sprint announced on June 5 that its iDEN Nextel National Network is still on path to officially come to an end at 12:01 Eastern standard time, June 30. The Nextel shutdown is part of its broader Network Vision plan to offer better service to its customers and was first made public in 2010.

Soldiers and civilians of the Fort Bragg community will no longer have voice service for their Nextel phones after the shutdown.

“We strongly urge customers to migrate now to avoid losing service,” said Bob Azzi, Sprint senior vice president-Network.

Sprint stated that it has extensively notified customers of the impending shutdown and encouraged early migration from the iDEN Nextel National Network to avoid service disruptions. The notifications included customer letters, legal notifications, email reminders, voicemails and text messages.

Sprint said that it will use other communications tactics during the network’s final days of operation.

“Our shutdown communications are meant to give customers more than enough lead time to plan their migrations,” said Azzi. “This has been especially important for public safety, first responders, health care users and others who rely on the service to protect and preserve people’s lives.”

The discontinuation of the network means that Nextel customers will no longer have the ability to call 911 after 12:01 a.m., June 30. If a 911 call is in effect and it gets disconnected due to the shutdown, the emergency dispatcher will not be able to return the call.

The Fort Bragg 911 center gets roughly 125 emergency calls daily and getting the word out could potentially save lives.

“We want to inform the public about the Nextel network shutdown,” said Scott Bouley, an administrator for the Fort Bragg 911 center. “We need to make sure that everyone is aware, and they are taking the proper precautions regarding the shutdown.”
Nextel still has a user base of close to 1 million that are dependent on its service.
