AKIZUKI PIER 6, KURE, HISOSHIMA PERFEECTURE, JAPAN - The 83rd Ordnance Battalion held an Inactivation Ceremony on June 26th at the Kure, Ammunition Depot. Kure is a small Japanese City south east of Hiroshima. The 83rd operated four strategic prepositioned ammunition depots in support of the United States Pacific Command Operations and the Joint Munitions Command’s maintenance demilitarization programs.
"I am a bit saddened to inactivate the 83rd OD BN, which has such a rich and unique history in Kure, Japan,” stated Capt. Matthew J. Johnson commander of Headquarter and Headquarters Detachment, 83rd OD BN.
“I am very proud of all we were able to accomplish. To see such a huge turn-out at the ceremony from the Mayor of Kure and other civilian leaders, the Japanese Self Defense Forces, and the Marine Corps just goes to show what a tremendously positive impact the 83rd OD BN had on the local community. I know all of the citizens of Kure will miss the 83rdalong with us Soldiers, said Johnson.
When speaking to the Soldiers of the unit they were echoing the same sentiments of SPC David H. Patterson, a Wheeled Vehicle Mechanic for the 83rd OD BN when he stated, "The experience I got from being in the 83rd OD BN was like no other. I have never been to a unit this small but so close knit before. I was able to complete my daily tasks and still be given plenty of opportunity to advance in my career."
Although the 83rd is inactivating, the mission will be taken on by the 10th Regional Support Group Ammo Depot for continued management of the ammunition mission. The amount of Soldiers assigned to the 10th RSG Ammo Depot is considerably smaller than the 83rd OD BN but the remaining U.S. Soldiers will work with both American and Japanese civilian contractors to manage and execute daily operations.
Even though the number of mission related personnel will change, the 10th RSG remains committed to its bilateral relationship in the Hiroshima Perfecture as well as the Japanese Self-Defense Forces and their friends and partners within the local communities.
