JOINT BASE LEWIS- MCCHORD, Wash. – More than 250 soldiers with 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division returned home in time to celebrate Father’s Day.
A welcome home ceremony was held for the returning soldiers at the soldiers Field House June 16.
The seven- month deployment to Afghanistan was long enough for many soldiers to miss the birth of their children.
Alex Patterson, spouse of Pfc. Scotty Patterson, a motorman with the 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, gave birth two weeks ago to her daughter Rayne and said she was excited for her husband to finally meet their daughter.
“We’ve had the chance to Skype and he has seen her on there, but it’s not the same as in person,” she said.
Patterson said it’ll be nice for her to relax and allow her husband to entertain Rayne and get some bonding time with her.
“I think because she is so young they will be able to bond easily,” Patterson added.
When Patterson laid eyes on his daughter in person for the first time she was asleep, and he seemed overwhelmed at the fact he was actually there with his wife and daughter.
Patterson said he had all these emotions and really couldn’t explain how he was feeling.
“As soon as I got off the plane, I just felt relieved,” he said.
When soldiers return home from a deployment it’s a special occasion. When a soldier is away from his family and meets the newest addition to his family for the first time it’s even more special.
Patterson said he didn’t know how he wanted to spend Father’s Day with his daughter. He was happy to be home and that was good enough for him.
