MYA NESHIN DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Leaders from the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan opened the Mya Neshin Comprehensive Health Center (CHC) with a ribbon cutting ceremony and a blessing in Mya Neshin district, Kandahar province, June 1.
District Chief of Police Abdul Satar and District Governor Rozi Khan co-hosted the opening ceremony. Several provincial leaders, including Provincial Minister of Public Health Dr. Abdul Pokhla, Deputy Provincial Governor Abdul Patayal, and Provincial Chief of Police Brig. Gen. Abdul Razziq, and dozens of villagers and elders attended.
“We are very happy for the opening of this clinic because we needed a healthcare center for our patients here,” said a village doctor.
The clinic’s staff of two nurses, two immunization technicians, one pharmacist, and ANASF and ANA volunteer medics will serve villages of surrounding districts. Patients can receive medical services for minor surgeries, wound dressings, blood transfusions, and immunizations with medical equipment provided by the Provincial Minister of Public Health.
The crowd cheered and applauded as Gen. Razziq, Deputy Provincial Governor Patayal, Dr. Pokhla, and the 8th Special Operations Kandak Commander Lt. Col. Ahmedullah Popal took turns cutting a large red ribbon, officially opening the CHC. Deputy Provincial Governor Patayal then spoke a blessing over the event and the center.
Afghan Health and Development Services Provincial Manager, Dr. Fazalrahman, conducted a tour of the facility’s two treatment rooms, pharmacy, two in-patient rooms and offices for several key GIRoA leaders immediately following the ceremony.
Such a large provincial turn out demonstrates increased provincial support to the local population and in turn, garners local GIRoA support from remote areas like Mya Neshin.
Eighth SOK Afghan National Army Special Forces (ANASF) and Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) provided security for the center opening.
“Fortunately, thanks to the ANASF and ANSF, this village and the surrounding area is secure enough for this event,” said the District Governor Khan.
The clinic's official opening strengthened ties between the Afghan government and villagers, who before the clinic’s construction, traveled more than two hours away to Tarin Kowt in neighboring Uruzgan district for serious healthcare issues. Since its opening, the CHC received a steady stream of patients from local villages.
Afghan National Army soldiers have also started using the clinic for their sick call needs. The AHDS will be able to provide sustainable Afghan health care to a previously isolated region with continued GIRoA support.
“Despite our budget limitations, we have made these promises with the local elders,” said Deputy Provincial Governor Patayal. “And with the support of the Ministry of Public Welfare in Kandahar and the National Solidarity Program, we will make sure to facilitate the needs of our people as much as we can.”
