MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. - Summer has begun, and there is nothing better to kick it off than a nice cool dip in either one of the swimming facilities aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River.
One pool is located at the air station’s new fitness center AS-4400. It is an indoor pool and open all year. The other is an outdoor pool, right outside of the Officers’ Club.
“The indoor pool includes programs that are oriented around physical fitness, whereas the outdoor pool is geared toward recreational purposes,” said Brent Williams, Marine Corps Air Station New River Aquatics Director.
American Red Cross certified water safety instructors give swim lessons at the indoor pool. There are 12 different levels of lessons. The lower levels are broken up by age and higher levels are separated by skill.
The ages set for each level are a suggestion. Parents should place their child in the appropriate level according to skill, as opposed to age, according to the New River Aquatics Program.
Children can begin swim lessons as young as six months, and both private and group swimming lessons are offered.
Group lessons are $48 per child and include eight 30-minute lessons. Private lessons are $18 per half-hour lesson.
There will be four two-week-long swim lessons this summer; two sessions in the morning starting at 9 a.m., and two in the afternoon starting at 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, starting June 18.
Some fitness-oriented programs the indoor pool offers include the New River Phrogs Masters Swimming Team, Aqua-Spin and Amp It.
Amp It is a program that started June 1, under a new fitness program schedule created by Headquarters Marine Corps for Marines and is offered all year, along with the other fitness programs.
“Set times are in place for free swim, which is there for people to splash around in the water, and set times for lap swim, which is for guests to swim laps and work on their swimming techniques,” said Williams.
Lap swim is from 5-7 a.m., and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Recreational swimming is from 8-11 a.m., and from 1-8 p.m. Units may also reserve the pool for physical training from 7-8 a.m., Monday through Friday.
The outdoor pool opened May 25, and will stay open until Sept. 2. Hours of operations will change June 8 until Sept. 2.
From May 25 to June 7, the pool’s hours of operation are 4-7 p.m., Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and on holidays, and noon to 7 p.m., Sunday.
The outdoor pool can be rented out for pool parties for $85 for the first two hours, and $75 every hour after. Lifeguards will be provided.
“We’re here for the Marines, their families and our civilian workers,” said Williams.
